The Temple of Heaven (Tiantan Park)

The Temple of Heaven (Tiantan Park), originally named the "Altar of Heaven and Earth", is located at No. 7 Tiantan Neidongli, Dongcheng District, Beijing . Its construction began in 1420, the 18th year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty, and was renamed the "Temple of Heaven" in 1530, the 9th year of the Jiajing reign . It served as the site where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties worshipped heaven and prayed for good harvests . Covering a total area of 273 hectares, it is the largest existing ancient sacrificial building complex in China .

On January 1, 1918, it was officially opened to the public as Tiantan Park .The park is encircled by two walls, dividing it into the "Inner Altar" and "Outer Altar" . The northern part of the domain is circular, while the southern part is square, symbolizing the ancient belief that "the sky is round and the earth is square" . It primarily consists of four ancient architectural groups: the "Prayer for Grain Altar" used for spring prayers for bountiful harvests, the "Circular Mound Altar" used for worshipping heaven on the winter solstice, the Abstinence Palace where the emperor resided before ceremonies, and the Divine Music Administration where ritual music was rehearsed .

The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (Qinian Hall) within the Prayer for Grain Altar is a landmark building of Beijing . The Outer Altar is planted with a large number of ancient cypress trees .On May 8, 2007, the Temple of Heaven Park was rated as a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction by the National Tourism Administration .
